Wyedean School

Client Requirements
Wyedean School is a dual use facility. The school wanted to upgrade their gym for curriculum use and to revamp the students changing areas; this needed to be married with the Council’s requirement to expand provision for the community and to generate revenue.

Design Development
Createability proposed a design to refurbish underused space for the development of a gym, reception area and changing rooms dedicated to community use. A new studio was planned, this and the sports hall were to be available for public use in the evenings and at weekends and for school use during the day. It was important to maintain physical separation between the students utilising these areas and the public usage. To achieve this, an access corridor was designed to control ingress from both the school premises and community areas.

“The refurbished gym and new studio has raised levels of interest in PE and given the school’s curriculum a real boost….”

Construction Phase
It was essential that the school was able to function as usual whilst the building work was in progress. Jonathan Bowdler, Business Development Manager at Forest of Dean District Council says, “Createability ensured the schedule for building works was maintained so everything was in place for the various suppliers to undertake their element of the work at the allocated time. This ensured the new facilities were delivered on time.”

Consortium Approach
This project was undertaken by a team with a proven track record of delivering all project requirements in a one-stop-shop thus reducing the risk of time and cost overrun. Alliance Leisure managed the overall project. Createability undertook the building work and the other specialist suppliers provided the fitness equipment etc. Jonathan Bowlder says, “Having the skills the individual consortium members brought in their own specific areas was attractive to us – we do not have this mix of resources in house.”

“The refurbished gym and new studio has raised levels of interest in PE and given the school’s curriculum a real boost. Community use is significantly higher than we anticipated. This is a result of the inclusion of the studio and sports hall, which provides a comprehensive activity mix attracting a wider range of people.”
