
Wentworth Leisure Centre
BACKGROUND
North Country Leisure operates the Wentworth site. The pool, fitness gym and sports hall, are all well used. However usage of the large indoor bowling area had suffered a steep decline. It represented 25% of the building's footprint but only 2% of the income and was only operational during the winter months.
DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
John Maude, Chief Executive explains, "We wanted a better use for this space that would increase participation and appeal to a wider audience of all ages and abilities. After considering various options we decided 10-pin bowling ticked most boxes.
CREATEABILITY used the space so their design could incorporate a seating area, which will make the visit experience more comfortable. We agreed to expand the children's play area and reconfigure the catering facilities.
PROJECT FUNDING, MANAGEMENT AND DELIVERY
The bowling was a new departure for us so we needed to be confident that the installation, as well as day-to-day running, would not be an issue. A visit to a similar site that CREATEABILITY had developed provided this.
Alliance Leisure put the project together, funded and managed it and CREATEABILITY designed and delivered it. We needed a company with leisure development experience to deal with all the things that are not our core business - selecting and managing the various trades people and suppliers, building regulations and so on. They used their programming and development expertise to manage everything whilst complying with time, budget and quality controls.
RESULTS
The result is something that we should all be proud of, it looks superb. We have successfully provided activities in a modern, stylish environment that fulfil our objective of attracting a wider range of people - in particular the family market for which there was little provision locally".
